This was the first of many musical settings of Metastasio's libretto Artaserse. Vinci and Metastasio collaborated closely for the world premiere of the opera in Rome. This was the last opera Vinci composed before his death and is considered his masterpiece. It is renowned among Baroque opera enthusiasts for its florid vocal lines and demanding tessituras. The opera premiered during the carnival season on 4 February 1730 at the Teatro delle Dame in Rome. As women were banned from the opera stage in Rome during the 18th century, all the female roles in the original production were performed by castrati. However, subsequent 18th-century productions outside Rome included women in the cast.

Artaserse remained popular for a time after Vinci's death but eventually faded into obscurity. The first modern revival was staged at the Opéra national de Lorraine in Nancy on 2 November 2012. The production featured Philippe Jaroussky as Artaserse, Max Emanuel Cenčić as Mandane, Juan Sancho as Artabano, Franco Fagioli as Arbace, Valer Barna-Sabadus as Semira, and Yuriy Mynenko as Megabise. In tribute to the single-sex casting at the original premiere, this revival was staged with an all-male cast, including countertenors performing the female roles in the opera.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1017/6462/8821/files/026a2fed-cd1a-4e3d-a694-643ef43b4a55_jpg.avif?v=1770035406
g-f-handel-arminio-dvd
G.F. The remarkable counter-tenor Cencic, who dedicates himself to the revival and performance of the music of the 18th century, demonstrates once more that Baroque singing can be both technically brilliant and at the same time modern and emotionally engaging. His enchanting staging of Arminio is the revival of the heroic story. When premiered in 1737 at Londons Covent Garden Arminio strangely received only six performances, despite being praised as a miracle and in every respect excellent and vastly pleasing by contemporaries. Handels opera fell into oblivion until Cencic put it into the limelight, resulting in the rehabilitation of the piece (FAZ). Cencics production of Arminio, which created a furore when performed at the Theater an der Wien, features the ensemble Armonia Atenea under the baton of George Petrou and stars the stage director in the leading role: Cencic is not only as countertenor, but also as stage director, at the peak of his success (Süddeutsche Zeitung).

<defs></defs><g id="onboarding_desktop" stroke="none" stroke-width="1" fill="none" fill-rule="evenodd"><g id="onboarding_todo_list" transform="translate(-1124.000000, -725.000000)" fill="#323335" class="vmioV uV1gr"><g id="welcome_3" transform="translate(1085.000000, 428.000000)"><rect id="Rectangle-3" x="39" y="297" width="24" height="2" rx="1"></rect></g></g></g>

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1017/6462/8821/files/d667d72e-906e-4d04-8a82-bd40455b6d49_jpg.avif?v=1770037981
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1017/6462/8821/collections/d667d72e-906e-4d04-8a82-bd40455b6d49_jpg.jpg?v=1772712523
